20-1
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Jockey: John Velazquez
Owner: Stonerside Stable
Breeder: Stonerside Stable
Cowboy Cal has been primarily a turf horse up to this point. After a poor debut on the dirt last summer at Saratoga, Todd Pletcher switched him to the grass, where the son of Giant's Causeway has lost only once in four outings. He kicked off the Derby prep season with a win in the Tropical Park Derby (gr. III) on New Year's Day, but was upset six weeks later by stablemate Why Tonto in the Hallandale Beach Stakes at Gulfstream. With Todd Pletcher seemingly out of Kentucky Derby bullets, he fired Cowboy Cal in the Blue Grass (gr. I) at Keeneland, and the colt was second once again to another stablemate, Monba. Cowboy Cal is certainly bred to get the 10 furlongs of the Kentucky Derby, and will need the stamina as he is sure to be accompanied by others that also possess his natural early speed.

Eclipse Award winner John Velazquez is well-known for his successful partnership with trainer Todd Pletcher, so it is extremely fitting that his Derby contender this year come from Pletcher's stable. Cowboy Cal is Velazquez's mount, and if the jockey improves off his second-place finish aboard Invisible Ink in 2001, he'll have himself a winner.
Velazquez, a protoge of Hall of Fame rider Angel Cordero Jr., began riding in his native Puerto Rico in 1988 and moved to the U.S. in 1990. His breakout season, however, was 2001 when he became the leading rider in New York. It was a title he did not relinquish until 2005, when he finished second. In 2004 and 2005 he received back-to-back Eclipse Awards. He has won or shared 20 meet titles at tracks run by the New York Racing Association, and has seven Breeders' Cup victories to his credit. He also won the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) aboard Rags to Riches in 2007.
Velazquez is the chairman of the Jockeys' Guild.
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 109

Born: Nov. 24, 1971, Carolina, Puerto Rico
Residence: West Hempstead, N.Y.

Favorite food: “Puerto Rican food.”
Favorite sport: “I do follow baseball, which is the only sport I follow. Sure, I’ll watch a little bit of basketball or football when it’s in season, but it’s not like I’m a huge fan. The other sport I like is boxing from Puerto Rico, but you don’t see much of that here.”
I can't live without: “My phone.”
Most hated chore: “I don’t mind doing anything, whatever needs to be done.”
The fastest I’ve ever driven was: “120 miles per hour in Florida; I was on my way to work in the morning. I wasn’t late, but I was going pretty fast.”
If I could trade careers with another professional athlete, I would: “Jorge Posada, the Yankees catcher. He’s a good player and an all-around good catcher. He has style, and he’s a class act.”
Another rider I admire is: “There’s so many good riders like Gomez and Prado, but a guy I admired from the beginning was Mike Smith. I always admired him and hung out with him.”
One thing I wish people knew about jockeys: “It’s difficult to understand. Riding the horse is definitely not easy, it’s not like have breaks and a pedal to stop and go. These are animals and a lot of things that happen are out of our control. We can’t control everything and it’s easier said than done; watching outside it looks pretty easy but once you’re doing it you have to make decisions very quickly, and things don’t always go the way you planned.”
The best part about winning the Derby this year would be: “I don’t really know. I’ve always dreamed about it; I always have it in my mind. It’s hard to say. I guess the best part of it is that you’ve done it.”
As Todd Pletcher's contenders for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) arrived at Barn 34 from Keeneland April 30, accompanied by stakes contenders Danzon, Leah's Secret, and Garden District, the Eclipse Award-winning trainer took time to reflect upon the challenge of reaching - let alone winning - the first leg of the Triple Crown.
Janice and Robert McNair, owners of Stonerside Stable, announced that any earnings by their homebred Cowboy Cal in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) will be donated to the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Before the running of last year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), Keeneland Race Course was overrun with trainers whose potential contenders were squeezing in final works prior to shipping up to Churchill Downs. This year, Todd Pletcher cut a lonely figure along the rail at the Lexington oval as he sent Behindatthebar to gallop and then watched Monba and Cowboy Cal complete their final preparations April 26.
One day after his 3-year-olds ran 1-2 in the $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I), trainer Todd Pletcher said he will take a few days before deciding when Monba and Cowboy Cal will ship to Churchill Downs in preparation for the May 3 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).
Trainer Todd Pletcher had won just a single race at Keeneland going into the April 12 card. But he won again where it counted, and with Monba and Cowboy Cal finishing 1-2 in the $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I), it looks like North America's leading trainer of 2007 will be headed to the May 3 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) after all.
Trainer Todd Pletcher was at Keeneland April 6 for the first time during the spring meet to oversee his horses stabled here, including the 3-year-olds Cowboy Cal and Monba. Both colts worked before sunrise, Monba in company with Ready's Image at about 6:15 a.m., and Cowboy Cal some 45 minutes later.
Why Tonto, not favored Cowboy Cal, won the Feb. 16 Hallandale Beach Stakes at Gulfstream.
Derby prospect Cowboy Cal will start in the Feb. 16 Hallandale Beach at Gulfstream Park instead of taking a traditional route.
