Guadalcanal was obviously the biggest surprise when entries were drawn for the Belmont (gr. I) on June 4. Though owner/trainer Fred Seitz said he had the race in mind for some time, he certainly wasn't on anyone else's radar. Still a maiden after five starts, he was beaten just a nose in his latest race, a mile and a half turf race at Churchill Downs. He was beaten over 25 lengths in his lone dirt track route race, and would need a monumental effort to win. He's by a sprinter in Graeme Hall, a son of Dehere, but does get plenty of stamina from his broodmare sire Quest for Fame (GB), who won a number of graded turf races in Europe and the U.S. in the early 1990s.

Guadalcanal, who has yet to break his maiden in five career starts, was a surprise entry in the June 7 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) when entries were taken Wednesday.
Rick Dutrow wanted the outside post in Saturday's Belmont Stakes (gr. I). He didn't get it. Instead, he got the inside post for Big Brown, which does come with a certain risk of getting trapped, but the rail is far better than the 10, where the risks can be greater.
Triple Crown contender Big Brown was installed the 2-5 morning line favorite and drew the rail in the June 7 Belmont Stakes (gr. I).
