With a win in the Holy Bull (gr. III) April 12, Hey Byrn is the only horse in the Preakness field with a win at the distance. The Holy Bull was lengthened and moved on the Gulfstream stakes schedule in hopes of keeping 3-year-olds around after the March 29 Florida Derby (gr. I). Hey Byrn was one that did stick around after finishing fourth in that race, and caught a fairly weak field in the Holy Bull. His connections entertained thought of the Kentucky Derby, but ultimately waited for the Preakness. Though not necessarily bred for route races, Hey Byrn has gotten stronger as the distances have increased. Read more here.
