Spark Candle

Trainer: Kazuo Fujisawa
Owner: Hidetoshi Yamamoto
Breeder: Robert and Beverly Lewis

Spark Candle accompanied his high-profile stablemate Casino Drive to the States from Japan, maybe with less lofty goals, but definitely not without promise. Improbable as it may seem, he may actually be better bred than Casino Drive. In addition to being by pre-eminent sire A.P. Indy, he is out of the champion mare Serena's Song, who is the dam of three graded and four stakes winners overall. The bloodlines obviously contributed to him selling for $1.5 million as a yearling. Spark Candle has only one victory to his credit, a maiden win in his third lifetime start. Since then, he hasn't been close in two races in Japan and the Peter Pan (gr. II), when Casino Drive beat him by 21 1/2 lengths. With his pressing/stalking style, he could attend the pace if his connections decide to run him in the Belmont (gr. I).

Casino Drive Works -- Or Does He?

Belmont Stakes (gr. I) contender Casino Drive went to the track for a scheduled work Wednesday, May 28, but in the end it was decided by the clockers that the time was too slow to be published as an official workout.

Belmont Notes: May 26

As of May 26, New York Racing Association Stakes Coordination Andrew Byrnes expects the Belmont Stakes field to be: Big Brown, Anak Nakal, Casino Drive, Denis of Cork, Icabad Crane, Macho Again, Tale of Ekati, and Tomcito.

Tomcito Hopes For Better in Peter Pan

Jet Set Racing's Tomcito, one of four horses that did not make the cut in last week's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), will be looking to make a splash in the June 7 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) instead. To do that, the son of Street Cry will take the traditional route, entering in the $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II) May 10, a 1 1/8-mile contest that serves as the local prep for third leg of the Triple Crown.
